Lighting up Las Vegas

There was a lot of work involved in making these two lamps – intricate woodwork, shaping plastic, complex angles, painting techniques. But it was all worth it, because now these two custom-design lanterns have a loving home in Las Vegas.

Supporting Small Business

It’s not everyday that I’m asked to design a shop window. However that’s exactly what happened a couple of years ago when I went to the opticians for new glasses. I got nattering with the optician – as you do! Eventually, after a long chat he asked me if I wanted to create a Christmas window display for the shop. Delighted to be asked and brilliant fun designing and displaying my work at Optique & Cie in Couhe, 86700.

Working with a local sculptor

This was the result of working with a local wood sculptor/artist a while ago. Stunning slices of a very historic tree made into totally unique wall lights. More exciting projects coming soon I hope.

Here’s what Brad had to say about it.

“After following each other work for some time, we met up and discussed a few ideas and projects. Those discussions about lights and the materials led to a shared commission to make a series of sculptural lights. So, I still had a collection of tree rings from a previous series of works in Holmfirth, Yorkshire. We used this as a basis for creating some bespoke wall lights.

When the lights are turned off they give a unique sculptural design to the wall. In the evening, with the lights turned on, they create a beautiful, warm, soft glow, that shows off the intricate designs of the tree rings. They’re quite substantial in size – just over 70 cm long and a depth of about 30 cm. The actual lighting is hidden inside a carved channel in the wood. You can see how the tree was sliced into rings and then each one was carved into individual pieces. The lights are two limited edition pieces that obviously cannot be created again. And that’s why we both love our work so much – because everything we create is unique”.
